Android Accounted For Nearly 70% Of Smartphones In 2012

Just a few days ago we reported that Samsung had dominated the mobile industry in 2012 accounting for over 30% of all smartphone sales.  Well here’s some more numbers for you to chew on.

At the end of 2012, Android devices accounted for 68.4% of the market.  In a rather distant second place was IOS with 19.4% while the remaining 12.2%  belonged to the rest of the pack.  Now if that’s not domination I don’t know what is.

Here in North America, it’s a much closer race between Android and IOS.  However, there have been several studies released recently stating that IOS is losing some of its shine even here.  One article I remember reading stated that the iPhone is appealing less and less to the “younger” generation and the phone is seen as the phone for “older” people.  Samsung’s ads may have had something to do with this as I can clearly remember one of their commercials implying this fact.

With all the new OS’ that could be releasing this year it’ll be interesting to see how Android holds up.  While I likely won’t ever abandon Android, I am definitely looking to give some of the new OS’, such as BB10, Ubuntu, and Sailfish, a try as they all bring something new to the party.

What do you guys think?  Will Android continue its dominance this year?
