BBM for Android tipped to be hitting beta testers again

If there’s one thing that BlackBerry can’t be faulted for, it is for being persistent. The company is reportedly rolling out another beta version of its delayed BlackBerry Messenger for Android app for beta testers to test ahead of a new, and hopefully final, release date.

At this point, it is difficult to ascertain whether there are still people eagerly awaiting the arrival of the app. That may be the case, if BlackBerry’s reasons for the postponed release of the app, which was set to launch last September 21, are to be believed. According to the company, a buggy, unauthorized pre-release version of the app preempted their launch and was quickly installed on almost a million devices, making any attempt to compensate for the data traffic and the bugs almost impossible.

Needless to say, the company, which has been acquired by Fairfax Financial for around $4.7 billion, put the launch of the app on hold indefinitely. Now there are reports that a new version of the app is reaching select beta testers. This updated app sports a few visible changes, including a polished user interface, a new welcome screen, and notification settings.

There is still no news of a new release date, though this movement is probably enough to give some sign of life. There is no question, since it said so itself, that BlackBerry is committed to still bring BBM to Android and iPhone. The real question is whether it will still make a difference by then.
