Corning Unveils New Bacteria-Killing Gorilla Glass

We don’t really like to think about it, but our smartphone and tablet displays serve a secondary purpose as petri dishes for bacteria thanks to constant interaction with our oily fingers. If you’re a real germaphobe you probably already spray your device with some sort bacteria killer on a regular basis, but Corning’s new antimicrobial Gorilla Glass may finally put your fears to rest.

Corning’s new technology promises to actively kill the algae, mold, mildew, fungi, and bacteria that finds its way onto your screen, keeping you safe from germs and even increasing the lifetime of your device, according to senior vice president and general manager James R. Steiner. The company plans to bring its antimicrobial to future smartphones and tablets as well as computers, calculators and anything else with a screen, especially in industries like health care and transportation where many people use the same devices every day.

Gorilla Glass is on display at CES 2014 this week, showing off the new antimicrobial technology. The company also unveiled new 3-D displays last week intended for future curved smartphones and wearable technology.
