Ematic EGP008 revealed, 8-inch tablet with budget price tag

If you’re an Android user but find the 8-inch form factor of the iPad Mini more ideal than the common 7- or 10.1 inch variety of Android tablets, then Ematic might have the device just for you. Introducing the EGP008, a Android tablet that might just be the right size and definitely the right price.

Budget Android tablets are almost a dime a dozen, especially if you’re not too picky about brands, although some big names, such as Asus, do put out low-priced tablets from time to time. With the new Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tablets, you also have more choices for power tablets that don’t have sky-high prices, though all of them sit cozily on the 7-inch form factor and not the 8-inch sweet spot that some find the iPad Mini to have.

With budget tablets, specs and actual performance are usually hit or miss. The EGP008, on the other hand, is surprisingly quite decent, especially for its price. It has a 1.6 GHz dual-core processor that is teamed up with a quad-core GPU, which should theoretically be able to handle a decent amount of moderate usage. It has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage plus an additional 5 GB of cloud storage, although Ematic doesn’t specify from where. The display supports a 1024×768 resolution, just enough for 720p videos, with a pixel density of 160ppi. The 3000 mAh battery is advertised to power the tablet for 10 hours. Unfortunately, the tablet is only running Android 4.1 and not the usual 4.2 that most devices sport these days.

The Ematic EGP008 isn’t the only 8-inch Android tablet in the market, mind you, with Samsung placing it’s somewhat unusual Galaxy Note 8 in that category. But with a price tag of $129.99, available from Walmart, it might be a better deal.
