Even Dictators Use Android

As we’ve been seeing more and more lately, handset companies like Samsung and Apple have been known to use celebrity endorsements like Lebron James, Samuel L. Jackson, Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd to help put their products in consumer hands. Well, HTC received an endorsement from a well-known political figure, but I’m not sure it’s going to help the Taiwanese company boost their sales in 2013.

Tyrannical North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-Un was spotted today using an HTC Butterfly handset during a security meeting with his generals. The photo was released by the always-dependable North Korea Central News Agency.

Seeing any kind of cellular device in a photo from North Korea is a kind of anomaly in itself. The country does not allow Internet access from mobile phones, and the North Korean government is known to track device usage with some sort of censor equipment. Apparently, the few phones that can be found in the country have been smuggled in from China. When citizens try to use the devices, they tend to use them in crowded areas so as not to get caught by the police.

What’s interesting about this photo is that it might increase North Korean demand for mobile phones as they tend to idolize their beloved leader. One can only wonder whether an eventual increase in mobile usage in the country will empower the citizens and help them mobilize to put this group of loonies they call a government in prison.
