FCC “May Intervene” on AT&T’s Sponsored Data Plans

Earlier this week, AT&T announced a new “Sponsored Data” initiative during the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show. The argument against this plan is that it isn’t for consumers, instead could basically become an option for advertisers or other big data companies to provide free data for specific content to consumers.

It’s kind of like free 1-800 phone calls you can make, though you might be able to say, download a movie trailer, without having that billed to you. The effects of sponsored data could be very far reaching, however, and that has the Federal Communications Commission a bit concerned. ”Let’s take a look at what this is and how it operates,” FCC chairman Tom Wheeler said Wednesday, according to The Verge. “But be assured, if it interferes with the operation of the open internet, there may be cause for us to intervene.”

Wheeler didn’t say that the FCC is definitely going to step in, but he did suggest that the FCC is going to look at AT&T’s plans very carefully. AT&T declined to comment when reached by TechnoBuffalo.
