Firefly fans will likely want to pay attention as we have some news on an upcoming game. Firefly Online, a game based on the television series has been announced during comic-con. The news coming out of San Diego tells the story of a game that is being developed by Fox Digital Entertainment (FDE) and QMx Interactive Inc. (QMXi) and set for release in 2014.

While a specific date has yet to be set, the game isn’t expected to arrive until almost a year from now. The Firefly Online announcement pegged the arrival as being “during the summer of 2014.” Further details here bring talk of a game that will be available for Android tablets and smartphones. The game will is also heading to iOS.

Aside from having quite some time to wait for the release, there were some details in terms of what can be expected once the game lands in the Play Store. You will be playing as a captain in the Verse that’s “struggling to get by” which just to clarify — is described as being “just like Capt. Mal Reynolds from the show.” From here you have to find a job, find a crew and keep flying.

Players take on the role of a ship captain as they hire a crew and lead missions, while trading with and competing against millions of other players like themselves. Much like the crew of Serenity, the Firefly-class transport ship featured in the original show, players must do whatever it takes to survive in the Verse: find a crew, find a job and keep flying.

In addition, there will also be the option to customize your ship, misbehave in space and participate in planet-side adventures. The game will also have cross-platform, cross-device support which means you will be able to pick-up and play anywhere. Finally, what Firefly game would be complete without a social aspect. In this case, Firefly Online will have that social side which means you will be able to connect with other game players and Firefly fans in general.

That being said, while we expect some to be anxious, we should point out that you can preregister on the KeepFlying website.
