Google acquires iProvo – brings Google Fiber to Provo, Utah

We have some excellent news for all you folks living in Provo, Utah. It looks like those BYU Cougars and the entire city is about to get some blazing fast internet speeds. Google has just announced their next-gen ISP service Google Fiber is officially coming to Provo, Utah. The small city will be joining a very elite club of only 3 locations in the U.S. to offer Google Fiber.

Google launched Fiber a while back last year in Kansas City, and since then everyone in the tech and geek world has been dying to get it in their city. Last week Google announced Austin, Texas was up next and now it looks like a small town in Utah will be the 3rd to join the club. Hopefully this is an indication that Google is ready to start making multiple announcements for other regions.

Being from Provo myself this makes me happy, yet sad that it isn’t available here where I currently live in Vegas. All you Oremites have one more thing to be jealous of Provo for, and that is Google Fiber. This new service will bring speeds reaching 100x greater than what is currently offered. Today Google, along with Mayor John Curtis announced the “big news” and confirmed what many were already speculating. Google Fiber will bring “free basic broadband service for every Provo resident for at least seven years, and free gigabit connectivity for hospitals and schools.”

Provo, Utah is a growing tech start-up city, as well as the surrounding area and this is a great move for the region. Not to mention Provo already has an established Fiber network. The local Fiber internet service iProvo will be acquired by Google in this deal, so add that to the growing list of recent Google acquisitions. More details on why this is a worthy acquisition and launch by Google can be read over at Provo Buzz.

We’re still awaiting more details but according to Tech Crunch Provo could have Google Fiber up and running by the end of 2013 after all the upgrades and approvals. Get excited people! Hopefully we see Fiber hit more regions in the very near future. And for you Football fans: Rise and Shine the Cougars are out…RAW,RAW,RAW.
