Google Purchases File Sharing App “Bump”

Google has just acquired another company, Bump.  Bump is a cross platform file transfer app that has been around for quite a while and here’s how it works:

Q. How does Bump work?

There are two parts to Bump: the app running on your device and a smart matching algorithm running on our servers in the cloud. The app on your phone uses the phone’s sensors to literally “feel” the bump, and it sends that info up to the cloud. The matching algorithm listens to the bumps from phones around the world and pairs up phones that felt the same bump. Then we just route information between the two phones in each pair.

I remember using Bump when it first came out but have been relying on other file transfer methods for the last couple of years.  It’ll be interesting to see what Google decides to do with this.  Will they keep it a separate entity or will they work on integrating it into Android?  Or perhaps they use this to replace Android Beam which hasn’t really taken off at all either due to its current limitations.

We’ll have to wait and see I guess.  If you are an avid user of Bump, you don’t need to worry about the app disappearing as they have stated that things are supposed to run as normal for the time being.
