Is Google Working On A Music Streaming Service?

Google Music

I’m a big supporter of music streaming services.  As you guys know, the one I’m currently using is Rdio but I’m always open to switching if the right alternative comes along.  Well it appears that another competitor (one that I’d definitely give some consideration) could be on the horizon if these reports turn out to be true.

According to Times, Google is currently in discussions with some of the major music labels about the possibility of a Google music streaming service.  Google already has a music store but it’s limited to the States right now and it’s a purchasing service, similar to iTunes.  I personally don’t feel the need to necessarily “own” the music as long as I can have it available with some sort of offline mode.

The best news about this new music streaming service is that it may actually be free.  The way that Google will be accomplishing this zero dollar cost is through ad support, something that already brings them majority of their profit.  It’s possible that their will be a premium version as well that will be ad free and may offer offline use (I’m thinking it might be similar to what GrooveShark has put together, just a little bit less on the border of legal/illegal).

I’d really like to see this come into fruition but their are a good number of hoops that Google will have to jump through, especially if they intend to release this more globally.  But given all of Google’s resources, they could definitely pull this off!
