LG Unveils Record-Breaking 5.5-inch Screen With 538ppi

As the spec wars wage on, companies push for better hardware and regarding smartphone screens the push is for increasingly higher resolution. Yesterday, LG revealed a 5.5-inch IPS-LCD panel with a WQHD resolution of 2560×1440. At that size and resolution, the screen packs a record-breaking 538 pixels per inch, the highest value of any mobile screen.

However, resolution isn’t everything LG can brag about their new screen. The newly-revealed display is also the thinnest to date with just 1.21mm, beating LG’s own record of 2.2mm set just a month ago. Apart from thickness and resolution, bezel is also one of the most important features today as it contributes to the overall appeal of the device, and LG didn’t forget this as in this screen the bezel has also shrunk considerably.

Sadly, this isn’t much more than an arms race as the technology currently available, processors and batteries, just wouldn’t be able to push this resolution for too long. LG didn’t say when we should expect this to hit the market, but given the lack of power to handle it we’re thinking late 2014 or later. Would you rather have an eye-burning resolution or bigger battery life? Leave your opinions on the comment section below.
