Netflix user profile support coming “soon” for Android

Netflix had previously announced they were working on individual user profiles. This was originally announced back in June, and as of today it looks like the roll-out is getting ready to begin. The news comes by way of the Netflix Blog where they have announced the launch of this new feature — a feature that will allow users to create up to five profiles per account.

These profiles will mean each person will have their own recently watched and instant queue lists. And perhaps more important for those who had been feeling the pain of sharing a Netflix account between family members — each profile will also have their own personalized recommendations based on what they watch and how they rate. In addition, each of those profiles can link to a unique Facebook account to further fine tune your recommendations based on friends.

Once your account has been updated to include profile support you will simply have to provide a name for each user. With that, Netflix has said these profiles will be available for “most” Netflix devices over the “next few days.” This includes the Netflix website. Other devices specifically mentioned include the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Apple TV, and newer Smart TV’s and Blu-Ray players. iOS users are also getting support at this time.

Unfortunately though, those rocking an Android device have the support promised to arrive “soon.” The Nintendo Wii has also fallen into that same “soon” category. One device that hasn’t been mentioned is the Roku set-top box. The profiles coming to the Netflix website first is a plus though as that is where the names need to be added and setup.

Netflix has said that “for now” user profiles can be added on the website and the PS3, but also made it clear that those profiles can be accessed on any of the devices listed above. Bottom line here, it looks like the Netflix user experience is about to increase dramatically as users will be getting much better recommendations moving forward.
