OPPO phone to use DigitalOptics MEMS camera, not Nexus 5

Reports earlier in the month suggested the Nexus 5 would arrive with a MEMS camera and Lytro-like features. That report was later debunked and things settled in with details about how the Nexus 5 would have a Sony IMX179 sensor. Specifically, an 8 megapixel camera. But just in case there was any doubt left, the folks at DigitalOptics Corporation have shared some news this morning.


Coming by way of the DigitalOptics statement; OPPO “has placed the first mems|cam volume production purchase order.” Further details here mention how OPPO and DigitalOptics Corporation (DOC) are listed as being exclusive launch partners and that OPPO will be the “first smartphone OEM to incorporate mems|cam products in volume.”

The OPPO smartphone will be the recently announced N1, which aside from the rotating camera, was the handset announced as part of the Cyanogen partnership news. To this point, DOC has said “OPPO has an excellent premium brand in China” and that “integrating mems|cam modules into OPPO’s best-in-class smartphones will bring an exciting computational imaging user experience that further delivers on OPPO’s brand promise.”

With that having been said, just in case there was any lingering doubt, DOC went a step further and also debunked those earlier reports — flat out calling them inaccurate.

“There has been speculation on who would be the first to bring the significant benefits of mems|cam to the mobile imaging market. Last week, several technology news blogs reported that mems|cam was first being brought to market in another smartphone platform. Those reports were inaccurate.”

Aside from this technology, we also know the OPPO N1 will have a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera that is able to rotate up to 206 degrees.
