OUYA Planning To Release A Console A Year

CEO of OUYA Julie Uhrman has made a bold but understandable statement: There will be a new OUYA every year. She says, “Our strategy is very much similar to the mobile strategy. There will be a new OUYA every year. There will be an OUYA 2 and an OUYA 3. We’ll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will.”

This is an understandable strategy, as mobile chips age fast. But on the other hand, paying $99 every year adds up quick. Paying $400 for an Xbox 360 on launch day will have lasted you over 7 years (not counting red rings), while a new OUYA every year will add up to $700. However, there is some good news.

All games for the OUYA will be backwards compatible, so you’ll never be forced into buying a console every year. Instead of each game being tied to a piece of hardware, they’ll be tied to your account. This is how Steam works, letting you play games across computers new and old. This is a fantastic strategy, allowing budget gaming to thrive while giving the best of the best to those who want it.

This news just makes me more excited for OUYA. Considering how much effort the company (and even NVIDIA themselves) are putting into this thing running at its highest capacity, it gives me hope that even with a Tegra 3, the console will last a good while. And if anything, the second generation one should be better in every way. Are you guys getting more excited?
