Renders And Specs Of A Mysterious HP Device Surface

HP Mystery Device HP Brave

It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything from HP in terms of the smartphone industry.  Their last big venture was purchasing the failing Palm and attempting to revive the amazing, but ultimately doomed, WebOS.  They semi-released a couple WebOS smartphone with the HP branding and one WebOS tablet, the HP TouchPad.  The phones never took off and the TouchPads were ultimately ditched through an amazing fire sale (I’ve still got mine kicking around:) ).  They eventually decided to give up on WebOS altogether and sold the OS to LG who is supposedly looking to use the OS for their smart TVs (although I wouldn’t be opposed to a WebOS revival!).

Despite their colossal failure with WebOS, HP is not ready to give up on making a name for themselves in the smartphone industry.  Back in February we reported that they would be re-entering the mobile device market with Android powering their devices.  That news was eventually followed up with the the release of the HP Slate 7, a 7″ budget tablet.  Now I haven’t seen any sales numbers on the Slate 7 but I imagine it’s doing at least semi-decent thanks to its low cost.

Even though their return to the mobile tech market seem to be off to a slow start they’re pushing on and some details of their first smartphone may have just made their way onto the inter-webs.  The picture you see above is a render of the alleged upcoming smartphone.  There’s nothing overly unique about the device but the bezel is nice and thin and it appears that they’ll be opting for onscreen buttons rather than physical or capacitive ones.  There also appears to be a notification light tucked in at the bottom which is a nice touch.

The second shot is a screenshot of the from the device after running the Antutu benchmark.  Based on the information from that shot, the device is currently being referred to as the HP Brave and packs some pretty top of the line hardware:

  • 4.5″ 1600×900 Resolution Display
  • 2GHz Snapdragon 800 Processor
  • Adreno 330 GPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 14.5 MP Camera
  • 5MP Front Facing Camera
  • Android 4.2

Besides the screen not being 1080p, those specs match up against any top of the line smartphone on the market right now.  I’m sure many will be happy to see that they’re keeping the device at 4.5″ rather than going all the way up to 5″ (although I’m definitely in the bigger is better camp).  All in all, looks pretty decent but at this point I’d throw this more so in the rumour bin rather than as an expected device for 2013.  We’ll be sure to keep an eye on new developments though and as always, pass the news on to you guys.
