Samsung, LG agree to settle display patent war

In a tech world that’s filled with companies suing each other left and right to gain the upper hand, it is sometimes reassuring to hear news such as that coming from Samsung and LG who have agreed to put down their swords and instead cooperate and compete on merits instead of getting bogged down in a mire of patent disputes.

LG and Samsung are two of the world’s top display makers, so it comes as no surprise that the companies would be at each other’s throats when it comes to the technology. Both companies have sued and countersued each other over patents involving Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) and Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) that the companies use in their TVs, smartphones, and tablets. In November last year, we heard that the two would be back in court to continue the patent tug-of-war.

It seems that Samsung and LG had a bit of sense knocked into them and have decided to amicably end the legal ping pong and instead work together to improve their competitiveness and positions as global leaders in the display manufacturing industry. No details have been given if there will be some partnership or money transfer involved or if the lawsuits were simply dropped cold turkey, but hopefully this is the last that we hear about these display-related head-butting.

It would be naive to expect that this would be a precedent that will be imitated by other warring companies, or that LG and Samsung would not face off again on some other technology patents. It should, however, give the Korean government some amount of relief that it would not have to intervene again between the two Korean companies.
